Eight people died on Tuesday when the matatu they were travelling in rolled several times on Nyahururu-Nyeri road.
The accident occurred at Equator, between Leshau Pondo and Ndaragwa Central wards, at about 6.30pm.
The travellers were residents of Kiboya village in Leshau Pondo, Ndaragwa constituency. They were on their way back from the burial of their neighbour’s mother.
Kamau Gathungu, who is Nyandarua Majority leader and Pondo MCA, Ndaragwa MP Jeremiah Kioni and Kiriita MCA Justus Gaita went to the scene to help those who were injured.
Speaking to The Star by phone on Wednesday morning, Gathungu said the 14-seater Central Liners Sacco PSV was on its way from Mukuruwe-Ini in Nyeri county.
“The vehicle rolled for more than 500m. The cause of the accident has not been established … no other vehicle was involved,” he said. “Four people died at the scene while three adults and a minor died at Nyahururu referral hospital.”
Police launched investigations.
In his condolence message, Nyandarua Governor Francis Kimemia wished those who were injured quick recovery.
“The county government will join hands with leaders and the community to assist with burials. I urge road users to be extra-vigilant and NTSA to enforce laws across the country and halt the carnage.”
On Tuesday, President Uhuru Kenyatta asked officials of the National Transport and Safety to get off the roads so that traffic police officers can take over.
The president noted that many accidents have been taking place. At least 330 people died in several parts of the country in crashes in December 2017 alone. Some of the most grisly accidents took place at the Salgaa black spot.
