Kenya is expected to honour the Euro-Africa Group 3 tournament in Montenegro next month.
The country will be represented by Shufaa Changawa, Judith Moraa and teenage sensation Angela Okutoyi. Caroline Oduor will captain the team for the five-day tournament, where the top two teams will gain promotion to Euro-Africa Group 2 next year.
Kenya face the likes of Lithuania, Finland, Cyprus, Cameroon, Malta and Madagascar in the event. Kenya had a poor campaign last year in Moldova, finishing a disappointing 13th after losing to Algeria. They equally failed to win against Cyprus, Ireland and Iceland.
Oduor said lessons have been learnt and the team is better prepared for this year’s event. “We had a poor show last year but we have exposed the players going into the tournament and we hope this will aid their confidence and help them to be competitive,” added Oduor.
Okutoyi is currently playing at the Africa Junior Championships in South Africa. Oduor said they will have to adapt to the clay surface in Montenegro and have started training for the event. “We have two weeks and we have intensified our preparations. We are also training in similar environment we expect in Europe,” added Oduor.
Elsewhere, Kenya will be represented by five players at the Africa Junior championships which starts today in South Africa. The five are Kael Shah, Angela Okutoyi Brandon Sagala, Jason Mboghoro, Alicia Owegi and Roselinda Asumwa. The competition ends on Saturday.
