CL, CC Draw Date Confirmed as Gor Mahia Shoots Up in Continental Rankings

Kenya’s representatives in the continental stage for interclub competitions, Gor Mahia and Kariobangi Sharks, will know the sides that they will be pooled up against in the first round preliminaries of the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederations Cup when the draw is held on Saturday 3 November in Rabat Morocco.

Gor Mahia are in the Champions League while Kariobangi Sharks, making their debut in continental football, are in the Confederations Cup.

Not seeded

Though not seeded, the two teams will be among the teams (54 in the CL and 44 in the CC) who will be drawn in the playoff round with the first leg matches scheduled for 27-28 November.

Having made the group stages of last season’s Confed Cup, Gor Mahia have improved in club ranking and are tied at position 39 in the continent with five other teams after accumulating five points in the co-efficiency ranking.

It being Shark’s first outing on the continental stage, they have no points.

Points criteria

The points are awarded with how a team performs in the CAF tournaments with the CAF CL and CC winners receiving 6 and 5 points respectively.

Progressing from the group stages and into the knockout round, a team will earn 3 points in the CL and 2 in the CC with those that are eliminated at the groups securing 1 and 0.5 points in the CL and CC respectively.

A teams ranking is calculated over a five year stretch with the current year’s performance being multiplied by five and hence K’Ogallo’s five points after attaining a single point for finishing third at last season’s CC group stages.

Kenya improvement

Kenya as an Association, is ranked joined 23rd in the continent with two other teams, as a result of Gor’s exploits last term.

For the upcoming season, the defending Champions League winner will receive a bye straight into the group stages.

Eight time African champions Al Ahly will take on two time champions Esperance in the first leg of their CL final on Friday 2 November in Alexandria with the return leg being away in Tunis on November 9.

The CC final to be contested by Raja Casablanca and AS Vita will be played on 23-30 November.
