Film Maker, Wanuri Kahiu of Controversial ‘Rafiki’ Film Bags Hollywood Deal

The Trend-setting Kenyan film director Wanuri Kahiu has been selected to impart her expertise on a romance film Covers.

The romance film, from the Universal Studios and Working Title, will take place at the heart of the music scene in Los Angeles.

Like Wanuri’s Rafiki, which sparked a national debate, Covers has many firsts as the script is from Flora Greeson, a first-time screenwriter.

This appointment came hot on the heels of the job she did on her feature film Rafiki, released early this year.

Rafiki paved the way for filmmakers in Kenya as the first Kenyan film to be screened at the Cannes Film Festival.

Banning of the film here in Kenya also, counter-productively, brought a lot of attention to the film, before the move was overturned by a court that allowed the film to screen at home.
