Lamu Senator Anwar Loitiptip Loses Seat After Court Nullifies His Victory

Court of Appeal sitting in Mombasa has ordered the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to conduct fresh senatorial election in Lamu county within three months.

This follows a successful appeal filed by Hassan Albeity of Wiper Party against the High Court decision which upheld Jubilee’s Senator Anwar Loitiptip’s victory.

The appellate judge on Thursday, July 12, cited cases where Anwar garnered higher number of votes exceeding the registered voters.

These various irregularities, the court agreed could have given the youngest senator undue advantage in the August poll.

The 29-year-old former banker got 14,432 votes against his closest rival Hassan who managed 14,374 votes.

Anwar however did not address members of the press as he rushed to the hospital where his mother is admitted.
