Prof Mucai Muchiri Reappointed As Karatina University VC

Prof Mucai Muchiri has been reappointed as the vice-chancellor of Karatina University for five years more years.

The appointment by Education Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed takes effect on June 4.

Ms Mohamed is also expected to determine the fate of remaining seven vice-chancellors whose term end this month and June.

This will be Prof Muchri’s last term at the institution that was given a Charter in 2013.

According to the Universities Act 2012, the recruitment of vice-chancellor, deputy vice-chancellors and principals of constituent colleges must be done through a competitive process by respective councils that are appointed by the Education CS.

Ms Mohamed has since received performance reports from university councils, in which some have recommended the sacking of their current vice-chancellors while others want them retained for a second term.

“The retention will be purely on the vice-chancellors’ performance,” said Ms Mohamed.

Other vice-chancellors whose terms have been extended include; Chuka University vice-chancellor Prof Erastus Njoka and South Eastern Kenya University (Seku) Geoffrey Muluvi.

The exit of those who will not be re-appointed will come at a heavy cost to taxpayers as they are entitled to several benefits.
